New IR Laws Finally Out
-Workplace OHS 25/11/2008
Deputy PM Julia Gillard has today delivered on one of the Rudd Government's key election promises, and has finally revealed the proposed new workplace relations system for Australia - killing off the unpopular WorkChoices laws.
Tabled in Parliament this afternoon, the Fair Work Bill 2008 includes more rights for unions, a kind of pattern bargaining, and no prohibited content in workplace agreements.
In her second reading speech, Gillard said neither unions nor employers got everything they wanted in the proposed new system.
'No one side of the debate is going to get everything it wanted because our new workplace relations laws are fair and balanced,' she said. 'Our laws bring the workplace pendulum back to the middle, where it belongs and where Australians want it to be.'
