It's been a big year thus far for Smart OHS who added the national bedding franchise retailer, Bedshed, NSW government business unit Service NSW, the Australian Security Industry Association and the Anytime Fitness franchise group to enterprise versions of the system.

The growth this year should see Smart OHS count 4,000 individual Australian businesses as clients, using its online WHS system, first released in 2004.

"We've aimed our product at Franchise Groups and Industry Associations who are essentially typically a very large cluster of small businesses with a central office/s supporting them," says Michael Kim, Sales Director.

"Unlike our competitors, we have the flexibility to be able to offer franchise groups and industry associations the economies of scale they are used to in delivering the highest quality, lowest cost technology to allow work health and safety to be managed easily and without a commitment of resources by the franchisor," says Michael.

"And having those big clients to build and support enterprise systems for helps us with all of our small business clients who aren't part of an association or Franchise Group. We are able to take what we learn from these groups back to our 'off the shelf system' clients to improve the technology even further to make WHS even easier for small business," says Michael.

Smart OHS started ten years ago with the founders, OHS systems consultants, finding that for the most part, small businesses neither had the time nor money to engage the services of a consultant to implement a health and safety management system.

The Smart OHS system is online and works by creating the business a WHSMS Plan, linked to a series of ongoing instructions for the business to login to their 'WHS Resources Area' within the system and use the online forms to records such items as: workplace inspections, hazardous substance registers and inductions. Businesses sign up based on their industry type and then only need to login after they've received an email reminder to do so and can track their performance over time via a 'Risk Rating' score.

For most small businesses, after the initial 30-minute phone call set up with a Systems Administrator, undertaking the ongoing tasks is about 15 minutes per week of work only.

Whether a small business needs to put in place an office whs system or if the business has a warehouse or factory, Smart OHS's online software is designed to allow small businesses to comply in the shortest time possible.

"Simplify. Engage. Comply. It's what we help small businesses and franchise groups do," says Michael Kim.
